Optimizing your Google My Business listing

Google My Business is most effective when you optimize your profile and make it more appealing for your audience – and the search engines.

Every time I work with a new client to boost their online reputation and optimize their online presence, I check their GMB listing and make sure the following aspects are optimized:

Name of the business

The ‘business name’ field on GMB should contain the exact company name on your business cards or your office sign. There is no need to add keywords or irrelevant information to your GMB business name.

Adding a location or other keywords will be classified as spam, and you could get in trouble with Google. This is a common problem in our industry, and it doesn’t help anyone. It also makes you seem untrustworthy to potential clients looking to hire you. You don’t want all your effort to get your listing to go to waste!

Categories of businesses

Your primary category informs your audience about the leading service you provide. It will also be publicly published, so choose it carefully as it will affect your local ranking for different search phrases.

Make sure you add all the categories related to your business. Category options are frequently updated, so keep checking back to see if any new types are added that may benefit your business.

Location

When choosing your Google My Business address, you need to consider two things.

Your business’s physical location and service area  Put your physical location on your GMB listing if you have an office, store, or showroom that customers can visit.

Additionally, make sure your address on Google Maps matches the address you have written down. Your customers may not visit you in person, so you need to generally ensure to ensure or communicate where you are located generally communicate where you are located.

Hours of operation

Two kinds of opening hours are required: regular business hours and special hours. Remember to update your business hours if they change in the future, as you might lose a lead if you don’t. Include all your regular business hours on your listing and ensure they are accurate.

Using Google My Business’ Special Hours feature, you can include bank holidays, special events, vacation days, etc.

Phone numbers

Your listing should include any active phone numbers. There are a lot of good companies that lose out on inquiries because they do not have a phone number or because their phone number is either old or disconnected.

Short name

Your business listing is easier to find by users when it has a short name and URL. Up to 32 characters can be used for the short term.

Please link to your website.

Linking to your website is one of the best ways to maximize your listing’s results. It has two benefits:

  • Once they visit your website and search for your services, they will know what you do and appreciate everything you do.
  • Your website’s ranking on Google will improve as a result.

Services

You should update your Google My Business listing with the services you offer. Provide a list of your most popular products, whether it’s mowing, trimming, tree care, snow removal, etc. You should sell what you do and provide the answers they need to call you.

Visitors from Google should understand what your business is before engaging with you.

Company description

Search engine rankings are not affected by the description of your company on Google My Business. As a result, you shouldn’t stuff it full of keywords and locations because that won’t help you rank better than your competitors.

There are 750 characters available for you to describe your business, and you should use them to convince potential customers why they should choose you. You should explain why you are better than others and what you offer. You want to entice them – let them see your company’s personality.

Add photos

You should add photos to your Google My Business listing to portray your business as authentic and professional.

Please make sure that your photos are clear and high-quality (not blurry or out of focus). Photos to include in your listing include:

  • Great logo and cover image
  • Office
  • Pictures of your team
  • Showcasing your business, services or  in most casesTheytypicallyproducts
  • Award presentations or presentations of awards

It’s essential to keep your Google My Business information updated regularly to stay with your customers, whether your opening hours, your products, or even how your offices look.

We don’t enjoy searching through pages and pages of search results just to find what we’re looking for.  As soon as they hit the search button, your optimized GMB listing will be displayed, and they will contact you instead of anyone else.
